Freecycle baby steps - a "new" sewing machine

By:
Fran
Date:
Monday, December 22nd, 2008

I took my first baby steps as a Freecyclist by responding to an offer of a sewing machine in a cabinet. Before I was ten, I learned to sew on an old Pfaff, in a cabinet, but my own machine is a portable. I've had it for years and have always regretted not having a cabinet. My biggest peeve with a portable is that the machine is raised up on the table, and you have to support the fabric by hand while simultaneously feeding it through the machine.

Thanksgiving dinner with the family

Thanksgiving dinner with the family is always a very special occasion. William was away and Alex had a last minute snafu and couldn't make it, but the rest of us gathered around the table to catch up on each other's news and to enjoy the festive meal. This year, in addition to the turkey, we had Brazil nut loaf en croute.

Chickens in the backyard

Date:
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

On a walk along the Radnor Trail we stopped and talked with a woman who has a coop and a few hens in her backyard. Since then, thought a lot about having some really fresh eggs. Unfortunately we learned and confirmed that raising chickens is not permitted in our township, but just in case that changes (incredibly some city in Wisconsin did change its bylaws to allow poultry raising) or we move to a more bird friendly community, I'm saving the research.

Because Fran had used her leave time recuperating from the flu, Paul had to go solo or not go backpacking at all. Going solo won out. On this trip he headed south from the parking lot.

It was obvious early in 2008 that it would be difficult to find much time for camping, so when we were headed to the Washington, DC, area for a memorial service for my aunt, we decided to see if there were possibilities for camping so we could be sure to have at least one weekend in the tent.Lake Fairfax

Memorial Day turned out to be glorious weather-wise, and we were glad to be able to share it with our friends. Here are more photos. Alex, William, Kara (Alex’s roommate) and Maggie (Alex’s puppy) came as well. Unfortunately they were involved in a fender-bender on the way back to the city.

Built-in shelves make practical storage areas and can be attractive, but if they're not well done, well, let's just say they can be eyesores.
